Building a Healthy Plate

As Bastyr University alumni we celebrate the Bastyr Healthy Plate as a visual to remind us that nutrition is more than just food, but also lifestyle and well-being. Here are what foods to include on a healthy plate:

  1. Fruits: apples, bananas, berries, citrus

  2. Non-starchy vegetables: asparagus, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli

  3. Digestives: sauerkraut, yogurt, miso, tempeh, kimchi

  4. Whole grains & starches: brown rice, quinoa, oats, whole grain bread, and pasta, or starchy vegetables like sweet potatoes and squash

  5. Proteins: healthy plant proteins like nuts and seeds and animal proteins like fish, poultry, and eggs

  6. Healthy fats: avocado, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish

  7. Hydration: water

We believe in celebrating all the things food can do for our bodies: nourish us, heal us and bring us joy. We think Bastyr’s Healthy Plate visual is a great reminder to eat well and live well.
